Nocturna - Rozee Cutrone
As a NAS graduate from 1985, I studied under Peter Upward, Ian Gentle, Rob Eadie, Michael Johnson, Roy Jackson. My first group and solo shows were with Martin Browne Fine Art in 2004 and 2005. I’ve returned to painting during covid after a long hiatus – while also studying for a masters in writing.
I prefer to work with Ink and acrylic on canvas because it dries fast, and the medium retains a certain dynamism. It can be unforgiving with ‘mistakes’, however I don’t really believe any line is a mistake – just an opportunity to make a mark work.
My work is a series of self-portraits, even in the landscapes and portraits of other people. I have considered naming them all self-portrait 1, 2, 3…100, and so on.
They are all about human emotion, the human condition and the journey of the soul. These works are partly inspired by an idea I had in art school back in the 80s. They often contain hidden metaphysical and Jungian themes, but I’m also focused on aesthetics – composition, tone and integrity of the line, which is inspired by Asian art and calligraphy.
I called this show Nocturna because it is mostly set in either dusk or night, with the cusp moon as a recurring motif. It should be subtitled ’I don’t know where I’m going but I know where I’ve been’
