Hugh Drake - Entropy

Disorder kicks off 2023 with the work of Hugh Drake.

Entropy sits inline with the ongoing motivation and inspiration driving my art practice, as well as a fitting tribute to the gallery name ‘Disorder’, which embraces the same idea of the random chaos and spontaneity of life and the universe!

Since returning to Sydney in 2003, from a seven-year sojourn living and teaching in Japan, I began experimenting with materials and media which would express my long-term interest in the new discoveries made in the science of space exploration and its newly emerging high-end images of the beauty found in the way galaxies were constantly crashing and melding into each other in the chaos they termed ‘Entropy’. This reflects, in a way, the same process driving the oceans and cloud formations we observe on earth.

I noticed  that various media, when combined with various liquids, behaved in a like manner, often with exciting, spontaneous results. This played well into my long-held fascination with the philosophies of Zen Buddhism and Hinduism, which had led me to my travels in Asia as an arts graduate, eager to explore the world in my twenties. I discovered the vibrancy in mandala paintings and spontaneous swirl of the brushstrokes performed by Japanese masters of calligraphy.

The recent and previous works in this exhibition reveal a portion of what has, and does, drive my art practice to this day.”
